Forest cover and forest loss

Topic description

It is surprising, but there is only one long-term (from 2000) forest cover product that distributes data every year, Hansen's forest loss, used in the Global Forest Watch. Numerous other high resolution (< 30 m) products exist that are based on optical (global forest cover change 2000, 2005, 2010, 2015), radar (PALSAR forest/non-forest 2017-2021) or multisource (JRC global map of forest cover 2020, ESA WorldCover 2021) data, however, they are not consistent.

This fact seriously delayed the development of the human-appropriation of net primary productivity (HANPP) forest harvest product in the course of the ESA LUISA.

Topic objectives and methodology

Your tasks will be to compare and validate the forest cover loss products, including the benchmarking against the land use and land cover datasets, such as ESA CCI. Feel free to come up with an ensemble or totally independent method of forest cover loss. Society and climate-relevant outcomes can be computed in the HANPP framework.
