Mangroves, shrimp farms and coastal erosion
You must have a solid understanding of the basics in remote sensing and being able to work with different data types. Affinity with ecology and mangrove forests is a clear advantage.
Suggested elective courses:
Anything with vegetation change detection and monitoring. Time series analysis is also a good idea.
The Mekong Delta in Vietnam experiences serious problems due to coastal erosion. The mangroves that protect the people and inland natural resources are disappearing rapidly in some places. Losses over a distance of 300 m or more over a period of 5 years can be observed. In some places coastal protection measures are taken like placing hard barriers and replanting of mangroves.
The objectives of the topic are to generate more insight in the extent and dynamics of mangrove losses and gains in the Mekong Delta (Vietnam) in relation to coastal erosion.
The methodology depends on what the student exactly formulates as research problem and research questions.
