Participatory planning
may include work in the GDR
For various reasons, cities have an interest in increasing the number of bike rides at the expense of individual motorised traffic. However, the planning of suitable cycling infrastructure (e.g. proper bikes lanes, service locations, etc.) needs to be balanced with requirements and needs of other transport modes and to take the given urban morphology into account. Thus, for addressing bikeability related planning decisions planning support tools (PSS) are needed that engage multiple stakeholders in a collaborative decision making. Potential decision problems supported by the PSS could be how well the current infrastructure/structure of the city facilitates different types of bike rides, what obstacles and bottlenecks exist in the current cycling infrastructure or what interventions are suitable to improve the situation. Potential planning tasks could be the planning of velo-routes (bike highways), separate bike lanes, parking racks, service centers, charging infrastructures and rental schemes.
Goal of the research is to develop a planning support tool that supports the participatory planning of bicycle friendly urban areas. The methodology may include the analysis of the current bikeability of a certain case study area or city, the development of a bikeability planning support tool (in the ITC Group Decision Room), and the planning, implementation and analysis of participatory planning workshops.
